We get asked this question quite often and we see it crop up on some of the shrimp keeping communities we’re part of online. So we thought we’d post a little article that makes it clear to explain the basics of one of our favourite shrimp foods.

So what are snowflake pellets made of?

In short snowflake shrimp food pellets are made from soybean husks (or hulls). These are the shells removed from soybeans before the beans are processed into other foods.

The husk does the job of protecting the bean as it grows inside the pod and as the bean falls to the ground, the husk would keep the outside world from killing the bean before it could grow.

To do this job it has to be tough, flexible, allow moisture through and to keep nasties out. These vital functions mean the biology of the husk is complex and packed with nutrition. There’s plenty of protein, starches and minerals (including calcium) wrapped up in bundles of tough cellulose fibre.

So when dozens of these husks are compressed into a small pellet, there’s a whole lot of natural nutrition in there just waiting to expand out for shrimp to enjoy. Check out our article all about how snowflake shrimp food is made for full details.
